WORLD LANGUAGES DEPARTMENT 5011: Spanish I CP* 5 credits per semester Prerequisite: None Grade level: 9th & 10th 5033: Spanish III CP* 5 credits per semester Prerequisite: A grade of C or better in Spanish II Co-Requisite: Teacher recommendation Grade level: 10th-12th This course introduces Spanish communication skills. It provides the students with a vocabulary that reflects daily contact with the world around them. Students are introduced to basic grammatical structures, which they are expected to master. They also practice essential verb structures to express themselves both orally and in written form. In addition, students are provided ample practice in pronunciation, listening and conversation. Awareness of Hispanic culture is stressed. WORLD LANGUAGES The guiding principle of the World Languages department is to enable our students to achieve a reasonable degree of fluency and understanding of the French,Spanish, and Mandarin languages, as well as the cultures in which they are immersed. To that effect Fairmont offers courses which build listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills from beginning through the AP and IB levels. As the importance for World Languages study continues to grow, we encourage our students to see the need for better communication and understanding in our global community. This course advances students��� ability to use the Spanish language and heightens their awareness of the culture and history of the Spanish-speaking countries. The course continues to expand upon students��� significant repertoire of vocabulary and idiomatic expressions. It includes a comprehensive review of grammar, an extensive reading of contemporary Spanish periodicals and completion of exercises to improve writing skills. This course uses a variety of themes to immerse students in meaningful communicative situations, to read for improved comprehension and to write for useful communication. 5022: Spanish II CP* 5 credits per semester Prerequisite: A grade of C or better in Spanish I, and teacher recommendation. Students who have not completed at least a full year of Spanish instruction will be automatically placed in Spanish CP I. No summer classes shall substitute a full year of level I, or two years of junior high instruction. Co-Requisite: Two years of Spanish in junior high and teacher recommendation. Grade level: 9th-11th 5044: Spanish III (H)* 5 credits per semester Prerequisite: A grade of B or better in Spanish II CP Co-Requisite: Teacher recommendation, successful completion of summer assignment, and/or placement examination Grade level: 10th-12th This course expands on the language learned in Spanish I. It includes a review of grammar, an introduction to the remainder of the verbal tenses as well as sophisticated constructions, vocabulary and idiomatic expressions. It emphasizes further reading, translation and writing exercises. It introduces students to more advanced cultural material. Speaking and comprehension skills are given continued stress. This course is designed for qualified students who demonstrate reasonable proficiency in listening comprehension, speaking, reading, grammar, and writing. At the end of this course, students are able to decide whether they wish to pursue the AP or IB class. This course is an equivalent to college intermediate Spanish. Its purpose is to review and expand upon the essential points of grammar and to provide the students with ample opportunity for developing all four language skills. Extensive reading introducing certain literary and cultural concepts enhances the student���s comprehension of the unique characteristics of Hispanic civilizations.
