WORLD LANGUAGES 5041: AP Spanish Language/Spanish IB SL* 5 credits per semester Prerequisite: B or better in Spanish Honors III Co-requisite: Teacher recommendation, successful completion of summer assignment, and/or placement examination Grade level: 11th & 12th and analysis of appropriate Spanish literature. A review of grammar and verbal structure as well as extensive expansion of vocabulary applied to various activities and forms of communication bring students to the level of functional fluency. 5158: Chinese I CP* 5 credits per semester Prerequisite: Department approval Grade level: 9th & 10th This course is intended to prepare students to succeed on the IB Spanish SL test, and it is offered to students who are willing to integrate their language skills using real world resources and topics. These students already have a comprehensive knowledge of the language and culture of Spain and Latin American Countries. The first-year Chinese course is designed for students new to the Chinese language. The student will get acquainted with life, culture, and activities in Chinesespeaking countries. Basic communication skills and the basics of both the spoken and written language will be taught with emphasis on speaking and listening. Pinyin will be taught at this stage of study. This course is taught in Spanish to develop language skills which can be applied to various activities and forms of communication. Reading comprehension and writing strategies in context are a valuable part of this class. This class also encompasses a reasonable mastery of grammatical structure as well as oral and written communication in different registers. 5159: Chinese II CP* 5 credits per semester Prerequisites: A grade of ���C��� or better in Chinese I Co-requisite: Two years of Chinese in Jr. High and teacher recommendation 5055: AP Spanish Language* 5 credits per semester Prerequisite: B or better in Spanish Honors III, Co-requisite: Teacher recommendation, successful completion of summer assignment, and/or placement examination Grade level: 11th & 12th This course is designed for students new to the Chinese language. The course is aligned to the national Foreign Language standards and provides a way to focus on the five important aspects of foreign language instruction: communication, culture, connections, comparisons, and community. It uses a variety of themes to immerse students in meaningful communicative situations, to read for improved comprehension and to write for useful communication. The course continues to expand upon the students��� vocabulary and idiomatic expressions. Culture is presented throughout the course to help students understand the context of the language and to better understand the perspectives of the Mandarin Chinese language.
