2013 highlights Nathaly BAsto CAmargo, one of OC REGISTER's "10 Grads Who Will Change THE WORLD" This year Fairmont had the opportunity to nominate one student from Fairmont Preparatory Academy for entry into Orange County Register's "10 Graduates Who Will Change the World" competition. Senior Nathaly Basto Camargo was selected from hundreds of other highly qualified local students for this honor. She started an organization in her junior year geared toward helping talented, high achieving, minority students gain entrance and earn scholarships to the nation's most competitive colleges and universities. Like many of her peers at Fairmont Prep, top college admission was Nathaly's ultimate goal. She knew it would take hard work, an exemplary academic record, and an impressive resume of extracurricular involvement and community service. But for Nathaly, making it to the college of her dreams also meant getting a scholarship. Nathaly did her research and she didn't keep what she learned to herself. She started the Pa'lante y Pa'rriba Project (PPP) (which means onward and upward in Spanish) and began sharing the good news with anyone who would listen, booking herself for speaking engagements at local schools and community centers. She conducted 37 presentations for over 2,200 students, teachers, and parents in Anaheim, Cypress, Garden Grove, and East Los Angeles. Nathaly completed her senior year at Fairmont Prep with a 4.63 GPA, an International Baccalaureate diploma, and a list of honors and achievements that includes National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholar and Gates Millennium Scholar Finalist. Natalie is currently attending Yale University on a full scholarship. It's a dream come true for a remarkable student leader who has already touched hundreds of lives in our community and whose influence will reverberate for many years to come. "I feel prepared for Yale because Fairmont has helped me in a way that other schools would not have. My IB classes made me think globally and think outside the box, as well as helped me perfect my study habits. I have also been involved with ASB and Speech & Debate, so I know how to work on a team and be a leader in my school and in the community— so that's what I plan to continue doing." – Nathaly Basto Camargo, Class of 2013 5 | www.fairmontschools.com
