VISUAL ARTS DEPARTMENT 6611: General Art CP* 5 credits per semester Prerequisite: None Grade level: 9th-12th VISUAL ARTS By studying Visual Arts, students learn how to see their world. They visualize, often for the first time, things around them and try to communicate what they see with visual images. By creating what we call ���art,��� students learn to appreciate and think on a new level. They also gain confidence in themselves as creative beings. They are able to express themselves using various media to communicate visually what cannot be expressed in any other way. 6711: Drawing and Painting CP* 5 credits per semester Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation or 8th grade Art for one year or CP General Art Grade level: 9th-12th This course explores the basic techniques used in twodimensional art such as basic drawing skills, color theory and use, texture, composition, etc. Students employ as many media as possible within the year including watercolor, pen and ink, pastels, pencils, poster paints and more. This class is a prerequisite to many advanced classes. Students are encouraged to develop their perceptive, interpretive and analytical abilities. This course is designed to develop and expand aesthetic perception, visual arts knowledge and the skills to express ideas imaginatively. It also develops a base for making informed aesthetic judgments. Students explore the historical and cultural developments that occur as a result of varying needs and aesthetic points of view. 6619: Graphic Design CP* Prerequisite: None Grade level: 9th-12th 6712: Advanced Drawing and Painting (H)* 5 credits per semester Prerequisite: General Art and Drawing and Painting Grade level: 9th-12th This course trains the student in artistic expression using computers and current software. Students study the history and evolution of graphic arts to the present day, and learn how it affects their daily lives. Students study two and three-dimensional designs, their construction, affects and appraisal. Special attention is given to communication through use of text, color, pictures and imagery. Students apply principles of design and elements of art using current software tools creating designs relevant to scholastic contemporary issues. This course explores advanced techniques used in two-dimensional and three dimensional art such as drawing skills, sculpture skills, color theory and use, texture, composition, etc. Students employ as many media as possible within the year including watercolor, pen and ink, pastels, pencils, poster paints and more.
