MUSIC THEORY PERFORMING ARTS 6514: AP Music Theory* 5 credits per semester Prerequisite: Ability to play an instrument (keyboard knowledge is a plus) Grade level: 9th-12th This AP course addresses the fundamentals of a college music theory class, that includes music notation, ear-training, four part harmony, basic music history and fundamentals of student composition. 6500: Music Appreciation CP* 5 credits per semester Prerequisite: None Grade level: 9th-12th This is a basic course in fundamentals of listening and the artistic perception of music. The students learn about the role of music in past and present cultures throughout the world, noting cultural diversity as it relates to music, musicians and composers. Part of the course is spent listening to masterworks of great composers from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionistic and Contemporary eras. There is a review of basic terminology and fundamentals of music. 6521: IB Music Performance SL* 5 credits per semester Prerequisite: None Grade level: 9th-12th IB Music Performance requires concurrent enrollment in one of the following classes: Band, Concert Choir, Show Choir. These courses form the basis of the work required to meet IB standards. Work done within the classroom, performances and competitions help to fulfill a large portion of the IB requirements. Students opting to participate in the IB section of these classes will also be required to meet with the teacher biweekly outside of class to work on the additional IB requirements which consists of essay and auditory exam preparation.
