Students will produce analytical essays and research papers. 4014 World History CP 5 credit per semester 4145: International Relations 5 credits per semester Prerequisite: None Grade level: 9-12 This course is designed to provide the student with an introduction to the study of international relations. It focuses primarily upon concepts and perspectives which one may employ in understanding and describing the behavior of nations and the relationship countries, governments, peoples and organizations. Draws from politics, history, economics, law, sociology, psychology, philosophy, ethics, and geography, the IR class teaches about global issues from a variety of perspectives; issues like war, poverty, globalization, diplomacy, democracy. Students will analyze historical issues and decisions in order to assess the probable consequences of current international events. Topics of study might include the balance of power, global conflict and terrorism, fair distribution of wealth, and the economic gap between rich and poor. Students examine the foundations, evolutions, and features of our modern American government on the federal, state, and local levels. The course balances political theory and ideology with historical and modern-day political dilemmas. Students develop critical thinking skills and through this practice, realize the relevance of political awareness and action. Specific attention is given to the individual functions of the separate government branches and the philosophical and political motivations behind their origins. Supreme Court cases, the roles of special interest groups and the media and opinion polls are addressed and analyzed. The purpose of the World Geography course is to prepare young people to become knowledgeable citizens of a diverse, global society.
