13,840 hours of community service by the Class of 2017 FAIRMONT IN THE COMMUNITY THE LITERACY MOVEMENT: STUDENTS START NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION In early 2017, four Fairmont Prep students (Lauren Ju, Camille Mejia, Savana Zand, and Kellen Zhao) created their own nonprofit organization, The Literacy Movement, with the purpose of encouraging literacy and education throughout the world. HURRICANE RELIEF: FAIRMONT CAMPUSES COLLECT DONATIONS In the weeks following Hurricane Harvey, each of the four Fairmont campuses put its own unique take on fundraising and partnering with schools in the Houston area. Fairmont Anaheim Hills hosted a clothing drive, Fairmont Historic Anaheim adopted classrooms at Texas schools affected by the hurricane, Fairmont North Tustin hosted a root beer float sale to raise money for those affected by Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma, and Fairmont Preparatory Academy donated books to an English class at Cypress Park High School. CHOC TOY DRIVE Students and staff members at all four Fairmont campuses participated in the Children's Hospital of Orange County Toy Drive, which gives toys to CHOC patients who often spend weeks or months at the hospital, and these toys are used during therapeutic play to help patients adjust to their hospitalizations. STUDENTS HELP LOCAL FAMILY IN NEED Mr. Harb's 5th grade class at the Fairmont North Tustin worked with Connecting Hands OC to adopt a family and ensure it was able to have gifts and necessary provisions during the holiday season. Rather than buying gifts for one another and exchanging them as part of the Secret Santa tradition, students purchased gifts for the adopted family and spent their time during their holiday party decorating a tree for the family and creating crafts with which to adorn it.
