2020 saw schools closing their doors and quickly pivoting from
on-campus instruction to remote learning. As a result of the shift to
remote and the disruptions it caused to the educational landscape,
education researchers across the nation predicted students would
experience an unprecedented learning loss, referred to as the
"COVID Slide."
Like the vast majority of public and private schools across the
country, Fairmont did not conduct our regular battery of spring
standardized tests. Instead, we started school this fall with several
formative assessments designed to give teachers a baseline of
where our students were and what we needed to do to help them
continue to thrive. We were delighted when our results showed that
Fairmont's students did not experience the
predicted COVID Slide — in fact, in some instances,
student showed signs of significant growth from the year before!
Teachers used test results to help further differentiate instruction
this fall, meeting the needs of all students whether learning from
home or on campus.
When the environment shifted
and the nation went into an
unprecedented change because
of Covid-19, Fairmont didn't
skip a heartbeat, didn't give
up on the children, but rather
adapted and continued to lead
the students forward.
