FAIRMONT INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL (FIS), partners with 12 schools in mainland China, South Korea and Taiwan serving over 1,200 students in preschool through 12th grade. FIS students study their national curriculum, in addition to Fairmont curriculum, as they prepare to become bilingual and bi-literate, with the majority of graduates heading to the US for college. FIS flourished in 2020. The addition of two new partner high schools (one in Taiwan; one in mainland China), along with its first full-time college counselor, translated to even more opportunities for overseas students. Right before COVID hit, many of the FIS educators who support schools in Asia were traveling during winter break. Due to the subsequent border closures, they were unable to return to their campuses and homes. Demonstrating remarkable resolve, they worked remotely from Australia, Texas, Virginia, and points beyond. During one point, FIS had staff working from five different time zones — all collaborating, in many cases teaching, observing classes, providing teacher resources for the pivot to remote learning, and working to make sure students were still being challenged and making progress. FIS teachers, administrators, and a college counselor worked diligently to prepare students for radically different online AP exams. Despite schools closing in January of 2020 and the tremendous changes to AP exams (including having to take the tests remotely in the middle of the night in Asia), 377 FIS students earned valuable credit on AP exams.
