Student Spotlights KION M. & RYAN M. Fairmont Anaheim Hills debaters Kion M. and Ryan M. stood out among 120 students at the New York Debate League's Fall Tournament in Manhattan. They debated topics such as if schools should be year-round, if adolescents should have the right to make their own medical decisions, and if museums should return artifacts to their country of origin. Their team ultimately took home a 1st place squad award for both total wins and percentage wins, and Kion was awarded 2nd top OCDL Speaker. Kion and Ryan represent the accountability and potential among Fairmont's skilled debaters. JOSIAH G. Middle school student Josiah G. is the youngest Eagle Scout in his troop. Last year, he used his Eagle Scout project to build raised garden planters for kindergarten and pre-kindergarten students at Fairmont North Tustin. After a significant amount of work getting approvals from the city, learning from skilled workers, and visiting wood shops, he presented the outdoor workspace to the school. The students now study plant biology in their new garden, and the planters are flourishing with tomatoes and flowers outside the kindergarten classroom. LEELA GALA Fairmont Prep senior Leela Gala has been doing community service for children in shelters and underprivileged communities for a long time. In her freshman year, she decided to create a club for Fairmont students to provide food for a children's shelter. The group meets regularly during lunch and works with teacher Ms. Kunkle to collect donations and food from Fairmont students and the surrounding community. Now, Food Served Here is a 501(c)3 non-profit that provides 80 bagged lunches to children 10-12 times a year.
