Olivia Bobrownicki, a student in ASEP — Fairmont's
STEM program — created a formula to help doctors
administer a more appropriate chemotherapy
dosage to adolescents. This would overturn a
method developed in 1916 that falls short of the
needs of young patients.
Olivia has been in the ASEP program since her
freshman year at Fairmont Prep, and with the
help of her teacher, Ms. Leslie, she's been able
to develop projects such as projects using a 3D
scanner, learn about disease spread (placing a
jellyfish cell in bacteria to make it glow in the dark),
and creating a robotic hand that can pour water
into a beaker. Thanks to her training, while Olivia
was on a summer research project in Peru she was
able to instruct accomplished adults how to use lab
equipment to sequence DNA. "The skills we use as
freshman in high school are the same skills being used
by PHD's and professionals when they're working for
government labs," she says.
Next year at university, Olivia plans to study both
international relations and infectious diseases:
she will use her skills to advise policy, particularly
for disease caused by global warming. We are
immensely proud of Olivia, and all of our ASEP
students following their passions under the
guidance of our Advanced Science & Engineering
Program Director, Science teacher, Ms. Leslie.
