The College Board and the University of California have recognized courses in the program as "exemplary and innovative." For those students interested in the fields of engineering and physical sciences, Fairmonts Engineering Magnet program offers a hands-on, project-based curriculum supplemented by internships (including Boeing), field trips, and guest speakers to give students an appreciation and a comprehensive understanding of engineering. Participants who apply to and are selected for this program take the following science courses (along with other required coursework): Through our partnerships with California State University, Fullerton and the University of Arizona, students can take up to seven university courses in math and engineering, earning up to 25 semester units on university transcripts by completing the Engineering Magnet curriculum. Sophomore AP Chemistry Biomedical Ethics, Research Theory & Experimental Design AP Psychology Junior AP Biology Honors Anatomy & Physiology Pre-Calculus or Calculus Senior Honors or AP Physics AP Environmental Science or Organic Chemistry Students learn, design, and carry out experiments in our fully equipped laboratory which houses a PCR thermocycler, gel electrophoresis, and other equipment usually found only in university labs. Sophomores carry out independent research and have the opportunity to present their work at the annual IEEE Measurement Science Conference. Students in the Medical Magnet Program have participated in the following research projects: Physical Therapy (USC) Stroke and Parkinsons Research (USC) Methionine Cancer Research (UCLA) HIV Research (USC) Metabolic Machines and Cadaver Dissection (USC) Biodiesel Research (CSUF) 22 | www.fairmontschools.com/ifc Fairmont Engineering Courses: Introduction to Engineering University Engineering 102 Engineering: Electrical, Mechanical, Nuclear Engineering: Mechanical, Civil, and Chemical Engineering: Dynamics, Oscillations, and Optics Professional Engineering Internship Engineering Research/Project Students have been invited to publish, present papers, and attend conferences to network with industry professionals. Fairmonts math program rivals those of top math and science schools across the country and allows students to take college level math courses rarely offered in high school. Through our partnership with California State University at Fullerton, students can earn direct university credit for most of our advanced math courses, giving them the opportunity to receive up to 22 units of university math credit by the time they graduate. 65 students took the AP Calculus BC exam, Fairmont's average score was 4.5, compared to 3.9 globally.* The IB Diploma Program is a rigorous academic program, which gives students the opportunity to earn an honors-level, internationally recognized high school diploma that can be used for admittance to universities around the world. Fairmont is one of few private schools in Orange County that offers an IB Program, and our program is unique because it is highly individualized. We work one-on-one with students to develop the best course of study.
