ENGLISH ELECTIVES This class presents a basic approach to composition and presentation. It includes the elements of the speech as well as the elements of speaking, the difference between a speaker and an orator, and various presentation formats. Students also learn how to capture the attention of the audience. In addition to the fundamental skills of speech, students focus on the debate process, the art of persuasion and the verbal essay. Students deliver polished formal and extemporaneous presentations that combine traditional rhetorical strategies of narration, exposition, persuasion and description. 8211: Journalism CP* 5 credits per semester Prerequisite: Computer knowledge Grade level: 9th-12th ENGLISH Note: Students study today���s world of mass media as they work together to create the student newspaper. This course is designed to teach the basic skills required to accomplish tasks such as interviewing, writing, editing, designing layout and composition. Additionally, the course instructs the students on the importance of ethical reporting, morality in the media and the newspersons��� responsibilities. Through the creation of a student paper, students apply their knowledge immediately and gain a broader insight into print media. 1115: SAT/TOEFL Prep Prerequisite: None Grade level: 9th-12th This SAT and TOEFL preparation course covers reading comprehension, vocabulary, listening, speaking, writing and editing skills. The course will help students read actively and analyze passages. Students will also have ample opportunity to hone verbal and listening abilities. Thesis statements and development, essay structure, supporting a claim, timed essay writing and effective rhetorical strategies will also be taught. Students will learn to become stronger editors of their own work and of other students��� work. Grammar skills are taught to assist students in writing and editing, and to prepare them for the multiple-choice sections of the SAT and TOEFL. Test taking strategies for these important examinations will be covered throughout the course. 1100: Creative Writing CP* 5 credits per semester Prerequisite: Department approval Grade level: 11th & 12th In this one semester elective course, students study skilled and innovative writers of prose and poetry to find guidance for their own writing. The techniques of quality writing are examined and practiced. The topics of study include short story/narration, descriptive, poetry and persuasive writing. The students��� own writing is the main focus of this course. 9634: Argumentation and Debate (H) Credits: 5 credits per semester Prerequisite: Instructor approval Grade levels: 9th-12th 1110: SAT Writing 5 credits, one semester Prerequisite: None Grade level: 10th-12th Debate class is equivalent to an ���HONORS��� speech class. Students enrolled in this class should feel confident in their abilities to speak in front of an audience.Students will be motivated to acquire communication skills quickly as the class will focus on the art of persuasion. Students will gain library research skills and critical thinking skills as they obtain and categorize evidence, and argue both sides of the National Forensic League���s Public Forum debate topics.This activity takes dedication and challenges students��� higher level thinking skills. Students are required to debate in at least three Saturday debate tournaments in which they will travel to other high schools to compete. Students must be willing to demonstrate self-motivation and self-control to succeed in this endeavor. This one-semester elective course prepares students for the SAT writing test. Consequently, they are exposed to the format of the test, learn practical hints for success, and have in-class practice time. Students may remain in this course after the first semester if class size permits and with teacher approval. Students learn and practice the fundamentals of good writing with a special focus on timed-essay writing. 6211: Fundamentals of Speech CP* 5 credits per semester Prerequisite: None Grade level: 9th-12th FAIRMONT PREPARATORY ACADEMY 10
