PERFORMING ARTS PERFORMING ARTS DEPARTMENT An understanding of and an appreciation for the arts enriches the lives of all human beings. Fairmont believes that each student should be exposed to music, art, and drama and the creative processes involved in each. Equally important is an understanding of the role that the arts play in modern culture as well as the influence they have had on culture in years past. THEATRE ARTS covered in this all-encompassing course: comedy, tragedy, Shakespeare, theatre as a means of social statement, and how theatre led to the development of radio-drama, movies and television. 6112: Fundamentals of Acting CP* One year course, 5 credits per semester Prerequisite: None Grade level: 9th-12th 6516: Theatre Arts IB HL* One year course, 5 credits per semester Prerequisite: None Grade level: 11th & 12th This Stanislavski-oriented course introduces students to the fundamentals of acting, including, but not limited to, the use of body and voice, improvisation, pantomime, scene analysis, character analysis and line memorization techniques. This full year course shares its core curriculum with the Theatre Arts IB SL class in encouraging the development of certain skills and attributes. It is, however, expected that students at the HL level will develop a personal research and practice routine in the theatre to extend their understanding of the ideas, practices, and concepts encountered during the course. Additionally, this course will have different requirements than its IB SL counterpart. 6511: Rehearsal and Performance Seasonal course, 3 to 5 credits per production Prerequisite: Admission by audition Grade level: 9th-12th Students in this course will cast and crew two Fairmont Theatre Productions: a fall semester play and a spring semester musical. Rehearsals for these productions take place after school and on some weekends. Students will learn characterization, script analysis, line memorization, improvisation, blocking and taking directions, as well as various aspects of producing a theatrical performance including theatre management, production, technical theatre, stagecraft and lighting. This course is considered a performance (pass/fail) elective. 6518: Film IB SL* 5 credits per semester Prerequisite: Honors English or Honors History/AP History, or a grade of B+ or higher in CP English II and/or approval of instructor Grade level: 11th & 12th IB Film develops students��� critical abilities, enabling them to appreciate the multiplicity of cultural and historical perspectives in film. To achieve understanding of internationalism within the world of film, students consider a wide range of film texts, theories and ideas from the points of view of different individuals, nations and cultures. Students also develop the organizational and technical skills needed to express themselves creatively with film. This course emphasizes the importance of working individually and as a member of a team. 6513: Theatre Arts IB SL* One year course, 5 credits per semester Prerequisite: None Grade level: 11th & 12th This full year course is an IB class that studies theatre history, theory and criticism, and the work of major playwrights.
