SCIENCE 3029: Organic Chemistry (H) 5 credits per semester Prerequisite: AP Chemistry, AB Biology Grade level: 12th 3050: AP Environmental Science* 5 credits per semester Prerequisite: Honors Chemistry, Honors Biology, Algebra I Grade level: 11th The AP Environmental Science course provides students with the scientific principles, concepts and methodologies required to understand the interrelationships of the natural world, to identify and analyze environmental problems, both natural and man-made, to evaluate the relative risks associated with these problems and to examine alternative solutions for resolving or preventing them. Environmental science is interdisciplinary, and it embraces a wide variety of topics from different areas of study including biology, chemistry, economics, and public policy. The course is designed to prepare students for the AP environmental Science exam. This course covers the topics that would be included in a first year college course in organic chemistry. In addition to looking at the structure of alkanes, alkenes and alkynes, we will look at the chemical reactions and mechanisms of these reactions. We will examine the reactions of carboxylic acids, amines, alcohols, esters, ethers, and aromatic compounds. Structure of compounds will be determined by using analytic methods such as IR spectrometry, NMR, and UV-Vis. We will also look at how organic chemistry is used in modern day society and medicine. 3039: AP Physics B* 5 credits per semester Prerequisite: Algebra II/ Trig, Department Approval Grade level: 11th-12th This course is designed to give the students a thorough understanding of physics. Students successfully completing this class should be able to take the AP Physics B exam in May. The course will include study in kinematics, rotational motion, fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, , energy, optics and waves, electricity and magnetism and modern physics including relativity and quantum mechanics. Extensive lab experiments will be done and students may be required to come in during lunch or after school to complete the lab work. 3034: AP Physics C* 5 credits per semester Prerequisite: Physics H, department approval Co-Requisite: Calculus Grade level: 11th-12th This course is designed to give the students a thorough understanding of the calculus based physics as it deals with mechanics. Students will be able to take the Physics C: Mechanics AP test at the conclusion of the course. It will include kinematics and Newtons Laws of Motion. Extensive lab experiments using computer based experimentation will also be done. Students are expected to be able to come in during lunch or after school to complete labs or other assignments.
