1045: Senior Seminar CP From Literature to Film:
The Art of Adaptation*
5 credits per semester
Prerequisite: Successful completion of CP English III
Grade level: 12th
ENGLISH
Weve all heard the same clich that the book
was better than the film. Why is this so? What makes
literature so much more compelling on the printed
page? Why do so many film adaptations fail? In this
class, students will examine various forms of literature
and decide how well each has been adapted as
well as look at the adaptation process itself. When an
adaptation succeeds, students will be able to decide
where and how it is successful. Also, students will be
able to understand how, in comparing original works
to their adaptations, they can learn to view films as
literary texts, and to look at literature with a cinematic
eye.
