Character Development Character education has been an integral part of Fairmonts curriculum since the earliest days of our founding. This year, we began a transition away from the Character Counts program, which has been in place at Fairmont for many years, to a program based upon Stephen Coveys The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Our teachers read Coveys Book The Leader in Me over the summer and began incorporating the 7 Habits into their instruction this year. The 7 Habits: 1. Be Proactive - I am responsible for my actions 2. Begin with the End in Mind - I plan ahead and set goals 3. Put First Things First - I set priorities, make a schedule, and follow my plan 4. Think Win-Win - I build trust and look for various ways to resolve conflicts 5. Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood - I listen before I talk 6. Synergize - I value other peoples strengths and learn from them 7. Sharpen the Saw - I find the right balance between school, health, family, and friends Young children may not understand big words like 'synergy' and 'proactive,' but they are more than capable of comprehending the meaning of each of the 7 Habits. At this age, helping children develop emotional intelligence--understanding the importance of listening, responsibility, and respecting others--is just as important as academic skills. Kristen Jansen Historic Anaheim Campus Preschool Associate Director ASSIST Program Fairmont began its In 2012 ASSIST Program in the year 2000 to better serve students in need of further individualization in certain subject areas or in skill development students participated in both for enrichment the ASSIST Program and remediation. When necessary, Fairmonts ASSIST Program also serves to on-board students who have recently transferred to Fairmont from other academic environments. 186 Each P-8 campus has a dedicated Fairmont ASSIST teacher who works with students on an individual or small group basis, and who provides constant communication to the childs teacher(s) and parents. Student participation in the ASSIST Program for each necessary subject may be short- or long-term depending on the individual childs need. Fairmont ASSIST teachers sometimes incorporate numerous language arts and mathematics programs outside of Fairmonts standard curriculum into their teaching in order to speak to each childs unique learning modalities. 27 | www.fairmontschools.com "Fairmont's ASSIST program is an extension of our commitment to differentiated, individualized instruction. Our specialized ASSIST teachers work together with classroom teachers to provide each Fairmont student with the learning assistance he or she needs so that students flourish and excel to their full academic potential." Sandy Cosgrove Director of Education The classroom teacher recognizes the opportunity for ASSIST to help your childyou dont necessarily know where your child is struggling or excelling. Then the ASSIST teacher works one-on-one with your child to help them in that particular area. My daughter has benefited greatly from her ASSIST sessions this year. Dave Jackson Fairmont Parent
